Bladder Circus Company
Budapest/Hungary
Music Theatre
Company
The Bladder Circus last set up its tent at UNIDRAM in 2002. Jazz musicians and actors make up the cast. Its founder and director Szabolcs Szöke is renowned throughout Hungary as a brilliant personality, (world) musician, instrument builder, theatre maker and visual artist.
Performance
All manner of surreal gadgets and musical instruments: a coloratura machine, for example, or a giant metronome which a man climbs out of. Is it an extravagant music shop, a live-in kitchen or a variety show? – the noise master, the blind funnel violin player, the diva plagued by arias, the hypochondriac kettledrummer and all the other manic musical clowns are collectively traumatised by the thought of having to use the opera urinal after the performance. They sound like the characters of Thomas Bernhard: Everywhere you look things are artificial and ridiculous. Yet if they do give a concert together, it turns into a music theatre happening somewhere between rondo and fugue: grotesque, melancholy and distant-sounding as though coming from another time.
