The Shadow of the Body of the Coachman
DeGater ’87/fabrik
Potsdam/Germany
Schauspiel nach Peter Weiss
Companies
DeGater ’87 is a free theatre company that was formed fifteen years ago in Potsdam, and has staged many theatrical productions in the meantime. Over the years the company has developed a method of working which combines choreographic, performance and narrative theatre in a search for artistic forms at the boundaries of theatre.
The fabrik Potsdam was founded in 1990 and has since become Brandenburg’s most acclaimed dance company. The two most recent productions of the fabrik were awarded first prize, in 1999 and 2002, in the fringe section of Europe’s biggest theatre festival in Edinburgh.
Performance
Enclosed within the microcosm of a country guesthouse, in an atmosphere of mutual observation and denunciation, everyday occurrences appear grotesquely distorted and unreal as though viewed through a burning-glass. Having meals together or waiting for new guests become unbearably forced situations. Dispensing with classical theatrical dialogue altogether, the production develops an ambiguous puzzle of reality and illusion from the non-verbal play of the actors and their monological descriptions.
