Extraordinary presence, intensity and concentration characterise the work of the scenographer, stage designer and director, Leszek Madzik, who was at UNIDRAM ’96 with his theatre company. Almost considered a classic in Poland, he looks back on nearly thirty years of work in the theatre, a career which has made him renowned well beyond the borders of his own country.
Performance
A sound in the darkness. As though grain were raining down from the heavens. A long, enclosed space, from whose strange and infinite depths snake-like shapes emerge, pursued by somnambulant figures approaching a moat into which they ultimately disappear. A perpetually recurring ritual. Life as a dream, as a painful trance of chaotic movements. Surrounded by an aura of religious associations reminiscent of Tarkovsky’s film, Stalker, Wrota is filled with visual and musical images refusing obvious explanation, yet, in a fundamental sense, examining human existence.
