Oranges and Lemons
T-Werk
Potsdam
English Fairytales and Early Baroque Songs
Company
Incorporating several independent Potsdam theatre companies, this non-profit association was founded in 1997 and has meanwhile become a major moving force in Brandenburg’s cultural scene. It turns out approximately six theatre productions each year and is the organiser of a number of festivals. In addition to theatrical productions, works in the area of music theatre form a strong focus of the group.
Performance
Solitary islands in the ocean, uncanny millponds, dark castles in the fog and old, sorrowful lords whose hair reaches down to the ground. Tim Toldrum might be king o’ the cats but when the evil Tommy approaches, Chicken-licken prefers to head off to into the woods. There an acorn lands on his bald head and he believes the sky is falling. This fairytale session is a lesson in dark humour – it is bloodthirsty, sinister and very British. Poetic, richly visual fairytales alternate with short, humorous stories, which in turn are complemented by songs by Purcell and Dowland. Although they sound like innocent swansongs, the call of sirens is clearly audible.
