Mary Stuart: A Deadly Casting Call
TART Produktion
Stuttgart/Germany
Drama after Friedrich Schiller
Company
TART was formed in 1998. One of the company’s key objectives has been to produce pieces that transcend boundaries and art forms by working in collaboration with artists from various disciplines.
Performance
Here, the aesthetic is shabby Renaissance, whether it’s the clothes, the wigs or the throne upon which Elizabeth I sits poring over the Financial Times. With an almost missionary zeal, Mary Stuart delivers a seemingly endless list of violent deaths; and a treatise on the rules of golf suddenly develops into a refreshingly theatrical event. One woman brings about the death of the other, yet it is hard to tell which of the two will go down in history as the true queen. Including texts by Schiller, Jelinek, Ionesco, Margaret Thatcher and Osama bin Laden, the bloody struggle for power between the two enemy rulers is ideologically charged, politically relevant and invariably witty. And the more the boundaries of time become blurred in this absurd atmosphere, the more controversial images of women come to the fore in the guise of these two undead women.
