Teatr Cinema
Poland
Movement theatre, 80 min, nonverbal
An old pub, a cramped classroom or a secret storage room? Each for
himself – yet all together in synchrony. In steady rhythm, unremittingly
and lost to the world, a perpetuum mobile made up of figures, objects
and film clippings produces surreal arrangements of desire, seduction,
dashed hopes and overdue gratification. A love story of two people torn
apart by war forms the backdrop. With absurd inventions of images as
well as droll disguises and states of undress, interior worlds are
shaped from the things that are sorely missing. Not only is the mystery
of love affirmed, but also the logic of terror during wartime is
contrasted with a wilful, intimate world somewhere between illusion and
reality.
One of the best-known groups in Poland who also enjoy an international reputation, Teatr Cinema
has been creating pieces since 1992 in which the “imagination revolts
against the routine of reality”. Their poetic work takes its inspiration
from the paintings of Magritte, the texts of Beckett and Dadaist art.
