Faust
The Basement Theatre

Figurentheater
Company
Formed six years ago, The Basement Theatre still works in the same basement in the centre of the Georgian capital, although the popularity the company enjoys today extends well beyond the old theatre walls.
Performance
Unique alembic! Reverently I lift you down and greet you. Drugs play a significant role in Faust, so the performance begins with a hypodermic needle being thrust into a faded Faust puppet to bring things to life – Mephistopheles and Gretchen, two of the awakened ones, play the main roles in this large-scale, devilishly seductive work. Or are they mere hallucinations? In any case, they evolve as stick marionettes, being moved simultaneously by several animators, the precision of their motor functions underscored by the cheesy hits of the 1950s. The critics have praised the visual and musical motif chains, the optical and acoustic correspondences, for these lend the production stylistic succinctness. Not to mention the fact that Faust in Georgian sounds like a long-winded alchemistic incantation. its mercilessly brutal images, making waves of rage and despair.
