Punch & Judy in Afghanistan
The Stuffed Puppet Theatre
Amsterdam/Netherlands
Puppet theatre in English with German surtitles
Performance
Puppets, war and terrorism – this play is a highly charged, politically incorrect farce that lurches between madness and reality, emotional depth and chaos. Camouflage nets and poppy flowers adorn the stage as puppet-master Nigel is employed to liven up exhausted allied troops in Afghanistan so that they regain their desire to fight. But as the camel makes off with his assistant in the direction of the cave stronghold Tora Bora, Nigel sets off to look for them in the war zone. Along for the ride are the Egyptian crocodile, and, of course, the foul-mouthed Punch, alias Bin Laden, along with his bloodthirsty wife Judy. With biting sarcasm, scathing punchlines and the odd, sinister That’s the way to do it!, there is a guaranteed unhappy ending.
