Theater des Lachens is one of the best-known theatre companies of Berlin’s independent theatre scene. Primarily influenced by director Astrid Griesbach the company draws its material from the international literary canon, from myths and legends upon which it creates its own unique variations.
Performance
The spectre of communism, once content with haunting Europe, has gone global. Seven baroque, barefooted history fools recite from the holy sullied book: at times choral, at times polyvocal, at times German, Viennese and Polish. An amusing, memory-driven battle of words about the individual, utopia, the class struggle and revolution. And though one may despair in the face of one’s own mission, the possibility of mischievousness endures. And insofar as the topicality of the material, its analysis and the vehemence of the economic and social critique so profoundly unsettle us, the direction is clear: to the sun, to freedom ….
