DeGater ’87 (Potsdam/Germany)
DeGater ’87 has been around now for 14 years. With an experimental and unusual dramatical programme, their more recent productions have shown a stronger orientation toward image theatre, performance art and new directions in Live-Art.
With the „Great Song of the Eradication of the Jewish People, one part of the ensemble takes a solo path in the direction of narrative theatre.

Jizschak Katzenelson’s epic of decline, entitled „Great Song of the
Eradication of the Jewish People, congenially translated by Wolf Biermann in 1994, was originally created in 1944, subsequent to the Warsaw Ghetto fights. In a language dense and hammering, coupled with direct knowledge of the dimensions of the experience, he left behind a unique, poetic testimony, yet unequalled in its fundamental stength. It is the book of Job in contemporary form, since Katzenelson not only draws angry and accusing words out of the domain of the unspeakable, words that rail against the atrocities of the Germans, but also extracts words of furious rebellion and despair that rage against God himself. In a solo performance, carried with extraordinary intensity and immediacy, fifteen songs are to be seen and, above all – as an echo of the silent script – to be heard.
