Company
Volne Zoskupenie (Free Ensemble) works at the Contemporary Opera House in Bratislava. Together under one roof, theatre people from many different backgrounds pursue common projects united by a similarity of stylistic devices, artistic positions and methods.
Performance
An empty stage, with no more than a few chairs. The choleric, chain-smoking man in the leather overcoat is reminiscent of the Polish grand master of theatre, Tadeusz Kantor, who was also known to manipulate his actors from on stage. A man spits into the air and leaps in the direction he has spat, trying to catch his saliva in his hands. Is this merely an embarrassing gag, a cheap circus number, or could it be a dance routine? Or are we witnessing a desperate search for an authentic expression of self? Linguistic chaos, caricatures, drastic humour and all of a sudden death appears on stage, requesting the ultimate transformation. Trivial comedy gradually turns into an uncontrollable game of power, refusal, loss and futility which is bound to end in sorrow and purification.
