Puppet Theatre of the Republik Srpska (Banja Luka/Bosnia-Herzogovina)
The Steadfast Tin Soldier
Figure Theatre after Hans Christian Andersen
Company
The puppet theatre of the Republic of Serbia in Banja Luka was founded in 1995 and has developed over 200 productions since then, many of which were conceived for children. Their repertoire spans from puppet to dramatic theatre to mixed genre crossover forms.
Performance
The tin soldier melted to a lump, and when the maid took away the ashes the next morning she found him in the shape of a small tin heart. All that was left of the dancer was her spangle, and that was burnt as black as a coal.
In this very loose adaptation, the surreal motifs of Andersen’s fairytale are further heightened to tell of love in a time of war, of the love between a soldier and a dancer. Their reminiscences, dream images and hopes are constantly overshadowed by brutal reality, by loss and betrayal. Using puppets of different sizes, animated objects, surprising visual solutions and naturalistic sequences, the production combines psychological drama with figure theatre oscillating between coarse directness and high artifice.
