Uta Gebert (Berlin, Germany)
Anubis
Puppet Theatre
Company
The Berlin puppeteer Uta Gebert studied at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin and the École Supérieure Nationale des Arts de la Marionnette in Charleville-Mézières. Besides her work as a solo artist, she is involved in international projects, including Paris and New York. She has performed at UNIDRAM twice before.
Performance Floating between this world and the underworld the audience can hear creaking noises when Anubis, the ancient Egyptian god of embalming, guide and friend of the dead, floats in his boat above the stage, crossing the river to bring the souls into the realm of the dead, as he is destined to do. I am not gruesome, I am not a skeleton! Anubis speaks with Hofmannsthal's words and thus connects Egyptian mythology to the Viennese Modern Age. With few words, mysterious images, delicate figures and spherical sounds, the core topics of Anubis are the transmigration of souls and the underworld. The play gauges the borders between life and death in an associative and poetic manner.
