Akhe is one of the best-known independent theatre groups from Russia and ironically calls its theatrical style – which features lots of unusual objects and artistic quotes – ‘engineering theatre’. As returning UNIDRAM guests, the group has created this performance especially for the festival’s 20th anniversary. Akhe is also performing one of its oldest pieces, White Cabin, which has achieved cult status over the years.
Performance
Vitality, violence, frenzy – the body as brush, the skin as canvas. Spraying, squirting and smearing by the bucketful: colour as noise, as chaos, as dance. As if Lucifer wanted to give his dwelling a completely new coat of paint while crooning ‘Ganz in Weiß’ by Roy Black. Forgery-proof, of no interest to collectors and definitely not looted art, Monochrome is a wild party fusing action- and body-painting as streams of colourful cocktails are wildly splashed about to the beats of a DJ.

Quirky, hilarious, surreal: White Cabin is a never-ending puzzle of lively installations, a dream theatre of chaos, nonsense and elegant tristesse, a kind of intellectual cabaret that enigmatically combines an excess of absurd actions. Three gallant heroes walk a fine line between acting, painting, photography and film – and go to battle with space and matter. The search for one’s fellow being thereby degenerates into a stubborn march past each other, revealing all the more clearly the real reason behind all human striving.
