Company
The dancer Ephia, joined by actor Benjamin Kraus, and the sound artist Jeff Gburek mix live electro-acoustic sounds with experimental physical theatre. Their pedagogical and performative collaboration, Djalma Primordial Science, was founded in 1998. From within this partnership of listening, Ephia focused her dance on the corporeal qualities of instability, fragility, and magma, a desire to scratch away the veil of illusion from theater, leaving only a potent encounter of body and environment.
Performance
For author James Joyce, continually threatened by going blind, his only daughter Lucia was a mirror soul, the cross-eyed saint of his visions. She was also one of the first Modern Expressionist dancers of the early twentieth century. Inspired by Joyce's novel Finnegans Wake and the relationship between the father poet and the daughter muse, this performance plays in the border region of light and shadow, washed over by oneiric video projections and electronic sound streams of unknown languages.
